Il gardera sa charge de recteur de la paroisse allemande de Paris pendant l’Occupation mais sous l’uniforme cette fois. Nommé aumônier par les autorités militaires allemandes, il est chargé de visiter les détenus et d’accompagner les condamnés à mort jusqu’au lieu de leur exécution, au fort du Mont-Valérien. Selon ses notes il aurait ainsi assisté près de 2 000 condamnés. Fait prisonnier en 1944, il est retenu à Cherbourg où l’Abbé Rhodain qui fondera le Secours Catholique lui propose de préparer la fondation d’un séminaire pour de jeunes Allemands prisonniers qui se destinent à la prêtrise. Avec l’accord des autorités alliées puis françaises, ce « séminaire des barbelés », transféré d’Orléans au Coudray près de Chartres, le 17 août 1945, recevra le 18 septembre suivant, la visite du nonce apostolique Mgr Roncalli, futur Pape Jean XXIII ; il y reviendra en 1947 pour ordonner deux jeunes prêtres allemands. Ce séminaire qui aura été fréquenté par 949 enseignants, prêtres, frères et séminaristes sera fermé le 5 juin 1947. La chapelle du séminaire, décorée des fresques de l’abbé Franz Stock a été conservée et rénovée. Son fondateur, qui avait tant aimé notre pays de Vannes à la suite de Jan VERKADE, mourut subitement le 24 février 1948 épuisé par les épreuves de la guerre. Il n’avait pas 44 ans. On l’appelle, depuis, « l’aumônier de l’enfer » ou « l’archange des prisons ». Le Pape Jean-Paul II cita son nom parmi ceux des grands saints de l’histoire allemande, à Fulda en 1981.
